The Angel of Victory
This photo depicts the center element
of the Angel
of Victory window. The angel stands
in a bower of palms, which symbolizes victory of the triumphant march
into Jerusalem, and she is surrounded by the Passion flower as a symbol
of the death and resurrection of Christ. The window
bears the name "Edwards was not a supporter
of Lincoln . . .(d)espite the fact that his brother, Ninian, was
married to Mary Todd Lincoln's sister, and that he had held a lifelong
affiliation with the Whigs, he left the Republican party to support
Douglas. His wife reported years later that 'feelings at the time
ran so high that they were forced to change their allegiance to the
other Presbyterian Church to avoid unpleasantness in the house of
God.' At some time after Lincoln's death they must have rejoined the
First Presbyterian congregation, for the memorial to Edwards, who died
in 1886, is there."
