The Four Sopranos
Neyna Johnson
Esther Davis
Paula Irby
Tracie Shaw
What do a Baptist, a Seventh-Day Adventist, and an African Methodist Episcopal have in common? In this case two things – God and singing. Neyna Johnson, Esther Davis, Paula Irby, and Tracie Shaw share a strong belief in Christ and the enthusiasm and talent to spread the Lord’s word through gospel music.
The Four Sopranos have been singing together since 1988, and Shaw attests that “God was certainly in the plan.” They decided to form a singing group based on mutual admiration for each other and their respective ministries. Their powerful and soulful spirituals and hymns convey their passion for gospel music. Praising God together has created an unbreakable bond among the women.
The Four Sopranos focuses its efforts on God and singing the gospel. The aesthetic blend of their voices gives their music a universal appeal. They have been previously voted the “best gospel group in Springfield” by the Illinois Times, and won first place in a gospel contest in St. Louis in 2003. They have been blessed to share their talent at a variety of events. The four have performed at the dedication of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, the Illinois Symphony Christmas Concert, the Liturgical Arts Festival, First Night, Illinois College in Jacksonville, the Martin Luther King Jr. annual breakfast, a Baptist Convention, and other numerous civic, social, and religious events throughout the State of Illinois. Several years ago they gained a little notoriety for a campaign ad they sang for Eve Blackwell-Lewis, a Republican running for Sangamon County Recorder. Their motto: “Go where God takes us.”
The group is delighted to sing at First Presbyterian’s Brown Bag Concert on February 13th, The four will perform some of their favorite Christian music with Paula Irby at the piano. They will sing a variety of gospel songs and spirituals. Their prayer is that those attending will enjoy the concert and be blessed.
